What’s in a Name?

Posted on by Deep Fried Advertising

I can say from experience that naming a business is one of the most challenging aspects of starting a business.  Without using your own name, it is a big undertaking to identify a few words that will encapsulate your brand!  For me, I wanted something that was classical, inspiring, and evocative…thus Giverny Design was born.

Giverny, pronounced “zhee-vehr-nee,” is a village in France and the location of artist Claude Monet’s famous gardens.  Monet is best known for his botanical and landscape impressionist paintings; a majority of his subject matter was taken from his gardens.  The name Giverny is particularly meaningful to me in that I identify with the French style of floral design, Monet is my favorite artist, and the impressionist style of painting is highly textural and incorporates a broad range of colors.  The themes of color and texture are fundamental to my design style.

Design is a word that is often used, but I feel that the definition is powerful.  According to Merriam Webster’s dictionary definition, to design is “to create, fashion, execute, or construct according to plan.”  As an event-based floral design company,  I customize each and every proposal to an individual event, and then execute according to my collaborative plans with my clients.

I hope that by providing the background for the name Giverny Design, you come away with insight on my design point of view!giverny-signature

Below is a recent breakfast table design, featuring locally grown camellia blooms and kumquat branches.  I took inspiration from the colors on the coffee can for this cheerful arrangement.
